One day we will all become sick,
one day we will all be dying...

Commitments

The patient, his family and loved ones are at the heart of our preoccupations. We favour a quality of life through relief from symptoms and we advocate a global approach for the patient and entourage.

The patient and those close to him have the right to receive accurate, clear, precise and continuous information from all the staff. We believe that a common language is a source of comfort. We harmonize our interventions and share information essential to the care and service of the patients.

We recognize that the care given to terminal stage patients is a domain in current and constant evolution. Our knowledge is continually updated so as to provide quality services, on an individual and collective basis.

We recognize that the support given to terminal phase patients and their families is complex.

We share in this responsibility to provide quality care, utilizing our respective competencies.

We recognize that families and loved ones are ideally placed to care for and accompany those in this final stage of life. We offer them our support in this endeavor through our humane and professional qualities, and with respect for the personal values and beliefs.

We believe that an adequate accompaniment must always be offered to the patient and his entourage, all the while respecting their right to do as they wish. We recognize the importance of respect for the individual rhythm and path that each may choose.

We take into account the abilities of the entourage to respond to a patient’s requests and the impact of these demands on the loved ones. We have the role of preventing the endangerment of the family equilibrium and protecting the survivors of this difficult mourning process. We accompany the patient’s chosen caregivers through each stage of the illness.

Our population

Our population ranks as comprising proportionately more elderly persons than other regions of Quebec. Provincial statistics show that approximately 90% of patients have no access to palliative care in their final days because of the lack of sufficient resources and that only 5 to 6% of their entourage is able to care for a terminally ill person.

An urgent need

By 2015 the aging population will translate into a 23% increase in the number of deaths, which in the majority of cases, will be illnesses necessitating palliative care.
